The Maryland Library Association (MLA) is proud to offer continuous learning opportunities for library staff across the state of Maryland to ensure libraries remain effective and responsive to the diverse and changing needs of the populations they serve.
Program Expectations and Responsibilities
Program attendees are responsible for coordinating with their employers to ensure that the continuing education sessions they choose meet the specific professional development needs of their roles.
Library staff will receive Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for attending programs that include a professional development component. Each session will specify the number of CEUs that can be earned
CEU Requirements
- Full Attendance: To earn CEUs, you must attend the full length of the session.
- CEU Assignment: CEUs are awarded based on the length of the session.
- One CEU for every 50-60 minutes of content
- A half CEU for every 20-30 minutes of content
- Conference Sessions: Some conference sessions may also qualify for CEUs if they meet the professional development criteria.
Topics Not Eligible for CEUs
Certain programs may not be eligible for CEUs. For example:
- Programs focused on advocacy or author discussions (unless they include specific instruction on library-related techniques or professional development)
- Topics that do not directly relate to professional practice or growth
CEU Certificates
After completing a program, participants will receive a CEU certificate, issued by the MLA. Program attendees will present the certificate to their library staff development contact, who then submits it to the state library for approval.
- Virtual Events: CEU certificates will be emailed out after the event concludes.
- In-Person Events: CEU certificates will be handed out at the conclusion of the event.
We are committed to supporting your professional growth through quality learning opportunities. If you have any questions about CEUs, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at mla@mdlib.org!
